Thanksgiving came a little early in our household this year, as Marv will be in Greenville for Thanksgiving weekend. We had a micro-Thanksgiving dinner last night, and by all accounts, it seemed to go really well.
The Menu
I made everything myself except for the pie and rolls. My sister has requested the recipe for the Orange Cranberry Relish, so here it is:
3 cups fresh whole cranberries
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons finely grated orange zest
1/2 cup water
Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium-low heat. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until cranberries pop, about 5 minutes. Let cool and serve. This may be made ahead and refrigerated, covered, for up to 1 week before serving. Makes 2 cups.
The berries before cooking.
(I added juice from the orange, and made mine the night before and kept it refrigerated. It was superb!)
It just occurred to me that my blog is becoming one of those boring housewife blogs full of details about what I cook for dinner, and how I decorate my living space. What have I become? I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm not a housewife by any stretch of the imagination. Hell, I'm not even a wife. But I'm sounding more and more like a domesticated Stepford woman with each and every post.
Oh, I know what I can talk about that's not related to food or home interior: The Johnny Cash movie! Being the die-hard Johnny Cash fan that I am, I rushed out to see it Saturday night. (It premiered Friday.) It was completely mesmerizing from start to finish. Joaquin Phoenix sounded eerily like Johnny Cash, even while singing. Reese Witherspoon did a remarkable job as June Carter, and I personally think they both deserve an Oscar.
There is one aspect of the movie that I think needs to be clarified. The title of the movie, Walk the Line, of course came from one of Johnny's songs. Anybody watching the movie who doesn't know any better will undoubtedly be left with the impression that he wrote the song for June, when in actuality, it was written for his first wife, Vivian.
At any rate, I left the theatre with even more respect for Johnny, which I didn't think was possible. Even if you're not a Cash fan (and I can't imagine why you wouldn't be) you'll still enjoy the love story, the musical history, and the remarkable performance Phoenix, Witherspoon, et al. put forth.
Welp, that's all for now, folks. Have a great Thanksgiving if you're in the US, and if you're not, eat some turkey anyway.
Thanks for the recipe!
